Imam al-Awzaa’ee ( rahimahullah):

“Hold fast to the narrations of the Salaf, even if people were to abandon you. (And) Beware of the opinions of the people, no matter how much they beautify it with their speech.” (Majmoo’ al-Fataawaa vol. 12, p. 497)

How deviance occurs (Advice to the Salafis in Trinidad 3)

Allah said in Surah Ghaafir, “No one argues about the verses of Allah
except those who disbelieve.”

The story of Waasil Ibn Ataa who is the father of the deviant sect
called the Mu’tazilah. He was one of the former students of Hasan Al
Basree who was one of the Tabi’een (the generation that came after the
Salaf). In his class Imam Hasan Al Basree was asked a question about
the one who does a grave sin and he said that the person who does it
is a Muslim whose Iman is lowered due to his sin and he is a believer
with his belief and a sinner due to his big sin (this is what the
Prophet (salallahu alaihi wa sallam) taught and what his Companions
believed). Then Waasil Ibn Ataa stood up and said “No, I THINK that he
is between two stations neither Muslims nor Kuffar.” He then separated
from Imam Hasan Al Basree and went to the end of the Masjid where some
people joined with him.
From this story we get many benefits:

(1) The Importance of holding on to what the Scholars who preach what
the Companions have said, because as we see in this case, Waasil Ibn
Ataa did not hold on to what Imam Hasan Al Basree said.

(2) That if it is we separate from these Scholars we will go astray.

(3) To never use the words “I think” when speaking about Islam because
Islam is not something subjectively conjured up in the mind. Rather
Islam is following the Qur’an and the Sunnah upon the way of the
Companions.

(4) The saying of Abu Yusuf (student of Abu Haneefah) who said, “This
religion is by narrations not by Opinions”

(5) That due to Waasil Ibn Ataa going upon his opinion and not holding
on to the narrations he went astray from what the Jama’ah (the
Companions and those who follow them) were upon. Hence it is safe to
say that opinion is the gateway to deviance.

(6) That people joined Waasil Ibn Ataa even as he went astray.

(7) The point of benefit is that the truth is not determined by the
many people that surround you or break away from you. Rather it is by
following the Sunnah and holding on to the way of the Companions.

(8) The meaning of the Hadeeth, “They will take ignorant leaders and
they will be asked and they will give rulings without knowledge, so
they are astray and lead others astray.”

(9) That knowledge is what Allah, the Prophet (salallahu alaihi wa sallam)
and his Companions have said. And anything that does not coincide with that and diffrenciates
from it is ignorance.

(10) The meaning of the hadeeth, “Whoever makes in Islam a Bad Sunnah
that he will get the punishment of it and the punishment of those who
follow it.”

(11) If a Muslim commits a big sin he/she does not become kaafir by
that sin. Rather his/her Iman is lowered due to committing the sin. In
this is also a refutation of those who believe that committing sins do
not interfere with Iman. Rather the belief of the Companions of
Muhammad (salallahu alaihi wa sallam) was that Iman falls due to
committing of sin.
